Temple of Clitumnus - River God and Romans
What better way to begin my blog about life here in Umbria, the Green Heart of Italy, than to show you the Temple of Clitumnus which lies a short distance from our home here in Foligno! Consider that this temple was a destination for Romans (emperors as well as commoners) who sought council from the oracles there and worshiped the river god. Inside on the rear apse walls of the temple are the faded traces of two eighth-century frescoes of Jesus and St. Peter and St. Paul. These are the oldest frescoes in Umbria.
In 2011 the temple became an official UNESCO World Heritage Site!
